mind & body

Guildford Community Centre, Surrey, BC

Comprised of static and ephemeral components, this site-specific installation reflects on the meeting of mind and body, on ideas of intellect and activity, stillness and motion, material and immaterial through the metaphor of human flight. From the lower entry one encounters Kouros – gazing up at Daedalus. From the upper entry you encounter Daedalus first and look down at Kouros whose shadow dons the wings. The figure and the wings only come together in the “shadows” of light. The installation is an interactive piece – a person on the running track triggers the “shadow of flight” on the wall to fly up the wall and back down again accompanied by BEAT – the sound of wings flapping overlaid over a heartbeat.
